What are Inlays & Onlays?
Dental Inlays and Onlays are two methods that dentists use to restore teeth after mild to moderate decay or damage. Dentists often call inlays and onlays “indirect fillings” because they are produced in a laboratory from a mold and later bonded to the tooth’s surface. During the first appointment, the dentist creates a mold for the inlay or onlay based on the shape of the patient’s teeth and the extent of damage and decay. The mold is sent to a laboratory to produce inlays or onlays, which are applied during the second dentist’s appointment.

When do I Need Inlays & Onlays?
While an inlay is applied to the cusp tips of the teeth, onlays are applied to extend over the cusps of the teeth. Inlays and onlays repair mild to moderately decayed teeth and create a uniform and healthy appearance for the patient’s smile. These indirect fillings also repair cracked and fractured teeth that are not so damaged that crowns are a necessity. Inlays and onlays are essentially an intermediate treatment between fillings and crowns for decayed and damaged teeth. If a dentist must remove old fillings, inlays and onlays may be used.
