Who Needs Dental Braces?

The people who generally need dental braces the most are those with misaligned teeth or a variance of malocclusion, which is when a tooth or several teeth don’t have an ideal position whenever the jaws close. There is certainly an aesthetic reason for why a person should get dental braces, but this isn’t the only reason why an orthodontist will advise a person that they need dental braces. Dental braces that fix a person’s teeth positioning will also help improve speech patterns as well as eating, offering better bite and digestion.

Am I Too Old for Braces?

There’s no such thing! Orthodontists will, of course, recommend dental braces the most for young children as it is easiest to change the alignment of teeth as they are growing — and dental braces do just that. That said, if money was an issue when a person was a child and/or a misalignment not seen serious enough to correct, then dental braces may be recommended and desired once a person gets older. Today’s innovative products like Invisalign and Clear Braces offer noninvasive, nonobvious ways of correcting one’s teeth alignment at any age.

How Much Do Braces Cost?

As noted in the previous question, the cost of dental braces is often a reason why some individuals don’t get them until they are an adult. The average cost of dental braces is around $5,000 but, depending upon one’s insurance and what type of dental braces chose, an individual may pay as little as $2,000 or as much as $10,000. As such, this is a braces FAQs that can’t be exactly answered. The best way to know exactly what you might expect to pay for dental braces is to talk to make an appointment with your orthodontist to find their recommendations and compare that to your own insurance policies where applicable.

How Do Pay for Braces?

Most dental insurance plans will pay at least partially (if not in full) for dental braces for children in nearly all cases. Many now also will offer compensation in part for adults who pursue dental braces. If your insurance doesn’t cover dental braces or only partially covers dental braces then a secondary option is checking with the optometry offices to see if they offer in-house financing. If you qualify for Medicaid, dental braces may be covered if deemed medically necessary, check their own braces FAQs for more information.

Can I Sleep With Braces?

Not only can you sleep with regular braces, but also many of today’s more innovative products labeled “nighttime aligners” are designed specifically to be worn only when you sleep. Note, nighttime aligners can’t offer quite the effectiveness as traditional dental braces, and it is important to talk to your optometrist before choosing any dental corrective product. If you or your child are having fixed dental braces installed, ask your orthodontist about dental wax as it can help make sleeping with braces easier.

This is another braces FAQs in which the answer is “it depends”. It depends on what type of braces you get and it depends on how serious your misalignment is. That said, the average patient who needs fixed braces will need to wear them for between 18 and 24 months, but more serious misalignment and other jaw issues may require patients to wear dental braces for upwards of three years. Those with less serious issues and who are investing in non-fixed products like Invisalign, Clear Braces, and nighttime aligners may only need to wear them for six to twelve months.

Installing braces won’t hurt and most users of nighttime aligners and more casual products won’t experience much discomfort. However, wearers of fixed braces may experience some pain and discomfort over time. This pain and discomfort are caused by the pressure of dental braces slowly pulling one’s teeth into alignment. The good news is that most people will only experience this in the first week following an orthodontist tightening adjustment and generally that pain and discomfort will become more and more unnoticeable the longer the person’s body adjusts to their braces. Tightening is generally done once a month for fixed braces.

The most straightforward answer to this braces FAQs is “carefully!” Before you begin brushing, rinse your mouth with water and aim to remove any food lodged between teeth and around the braces. Next, using a toothbrush designed for fixed braces, brush at a 45-degree starting at the gum line and slowly, but directly continue brushing your teeth in this angled manner.

If you choose nonfixed braces, such as Invisalign and Clear Braces, then brushing with braces will be less of an issue as these types of braces allow one to remove them for limited periods of time. Brushing your teeth is one such time.
