If your mouth feels sore or sensitive after you receive dental braces, don’t panic. This soreness is perfectly normal. The sensitivity will gradually decline in the days ahead. At most, it might take a weeks for the soreness to dissipate. Once the sensitivity from braces is gone, you can start eating most of the foods you enjoyed prior to receiving your braces. However, if the soreness lingers, it will help to swish eight ounces of warm water with a teaspoon of salt. Gargle with this mixture for a minute, spit it back out and you just might find your mouth is no longer sore, even if you were eating with braces throughout the majority of the day.
It is possible that eating, talking and using your mouth for other purposes will cause the braces’ wires or bands to loosen. The bottom line is braces require periodic adjustments at the orthodontist’s office. Eating particularly crunchy or sticky foods, suffering a mouth injury and picking at your braces is more likely to result in a loosening of the dental braces’ wires and bands. If you suffer any such issues, contact your orthodontist instead of attempting to bend the compromised bracket or wire back into place on your own.
If you notice your teeth feel a bit loose after you receive dental braces, don’t panic. You might notice this loosening while eating or talking. The braces function by initially loosening the teeth so they can move to the proper position. Once the teeth are repositioned, they won’t feel nearly as loose. Give your teeth some time to adjust to the braces and you will find eating, talking, laughing, yawning and other activities using your mouth prove harmless.
