Need Sealant?

Sealants are thin films of resin applied to the pits, fissures, and grooves of molars in order to prevent decay. The majority of decay on back teeth begins in the grooves and pits of chewing surfaces, particularly in the first few years after emergence. This type of deterioration can be avoided by sealing these surfaces with composite resins.

What Is Sealant?

Sealant is designed to seal out cavities by protecting your teeth with a thin, plastic coating that is painted on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth where grooves and pits are common, and cavities occur most often. The liquid sealant dries quickly and hardens forming a shield providing your teeth with extra protection against tooth decay. Having the sealant put on is painless and quick, and it usually last about ten years.

When Do You Need Sealant?

Generally, teeth sealant is applied when a child’s permanent molars come in between the ages of 6 and 12. However, it is not uncommon to have baby teeth sealed especially if the enamel is week, has large pits or grooves in them. The baby teeth are more important than some people realize, if a baby tooth is decayed and not taken care of promptly the decay process can spread into the permanent teeth. Children are not the only ones that should have their teeth sealed, a teenager who rarely has a cavity or adults who have good healthy strong teeth should also consider having their teeth sealed for the extra protection.
