Simple Dental Extraction in Houston

When you require a dental extraction, our highly qualified and experienced dentist and their team will carry it out. Some of the reasons that you may need a tooth extraction include tooth decay or infection, advanced periodontal disease, fractured teeth, or the extraction of supernumerary teeth or third molars. Additionally, you may have tooth removal as a component of a cosmetic procedure or during the prosthetics phase of the fitting of dentures.

In our dental clinic, doing dental extractions—both simple and complex surgical extractions—is a routine procedure. During a simple extraction, the patient will receive a local anesthetic. The dentist will then carefully elevate and secure the tooth with specialist dental instruments, carefully handle it, and withdraw it from the oral cavity with a slow and consistent force.

More About Dental Extraction

1

Surgical Dental Extraction

When a tooth is not easily accessible, such as when it has been broken off below the gum line or when it has not yet broken through the gums and is still below the gum line, our dentists will perform a surgical extraction. During surgical extractions, a gingival incision is made, and the dentist will meticulously extract the tooth, sometimes by dividing it into multiple fragments. Typically, these extractions necessitate using a general anesthetic instead of a local one.

2

How to Get Ready for a Tooth Extraction

Prior to extracting a tooth, the dentist will thoroughly evaluate your dental and medical records and capture any required X-ray images. An X-ray visually represents the tooth's morphology, position, dimensions, and surrounding alveolar bone. We will use this information to determine the optimal tooth extraction approach. They will numb the region surrounding your tooth with an anesthetic before extracting it during a straightforward extraction.

Tips to Help the Tooth-Removal Area Heal Well

  • After dental extraction, don’t rinse your mouth for at least 24 hours. If you rinse your mouth, you might break up the blood clots and start bleeding again.
  • After 24 hours, rinse the area four times daily with mouthwash to keep it clean.
  • Eat soft foods so you don’t have to chew too much.
  • If your gum starts to bleed, bite down for at least 15 minutes on a clean pad of material.
  • Smoking should not be done for 3-4 days, but ideally for one week. Same with alcohol, 3-4 days at least.

  • No spitting, no straw use.

  • Don’t forget to brush your teeth, but keep your toothbrush away from the wound while it heals. Each day, you can move your toothbrush closer to the wound. For example, you could put your toothbrush in hot water to soften it up before you use it.

Following a tooth extraction, it is common to experience bleeding for a brief period of time. The recommended course of action is to apply pressure on the affected area using a piece of gauze until the bleeding subsides.

We will provide you with instructions on how to properly maintain your teeth and gums before you leave the clinic. We also recommend pain relievers and antimicrobial mouthwashes to eliminate bacteria. Then we will prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection following a dental procedure.

It is advisable to take some rest until the sedative or anesthetic effects have subsided.

It is advisable to remain at rest until the anesthetic or sedative’s effects subside. While the anesthetic wears off, ask your family or friends to look after you for a day.

It is typically unnecessary to continue visiting the dentist after a tooth extraction. However, if you require more complex treatment, scheduling an appointment with our dentists at Zara Dental may be necessary. In addition, we need to examine your healing progress following the tooth extraction.
