Is It Time For Lengthening?
When not enough of your tooth is exposed to support a crown or filling, you might need to have a crown lengthening procedure performed, in which the dentist will expose more surface area of the tooth by removing gum tissue. This is most commonly necessary when a tooth has broken off at or near the gum line or when a filling or crown has become unseated revealing decay underneath.
Zara Dental
Post Crown Lengthening
Post surgery, you will have a mouth rinse and a pain relief prescription, and you will need to eat a soft diet. After 7 to 10 days, you will have your stitches removed, and then you will have a follow-up visit after about 4-6 weeks. After your gums have healed for about a total of three months, the final crown will be put in place.
Your experienced dentist at Zara Dental Services in Houston will review the steps of the procedure with you in detail should crown lengthening be necessary for you. In short, however, while you are under local anesthesia, your periodontist will cut away some of the gums, exposing enough of the roots of the tooth for a filling or crown to be placed. In some cases, bone at the root of the tooth will also need to be removed. Once there is enough exposed tooth, a sterile salt water bath is used and the incisions are stitched.
